Norwegian concert comes to Leeds Town Hall
A Norwegian theme takes over Leeds Town Hall at the end of October when the Trondheim Soloists and trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth perform works by their country’s composers past and present.

Saturday 31 October’s concert will feature compositions by both Grieg (1843-1907) and Rolf Wallin (1957-), including Grieg’s Two Nordic Melodies and Wallin’s  Elegy for Trumpet. Also included in the programme is Neruda Trumpet Concerto, Elgar Serenade for Strings and Britten Simple Symphony, with its light-heartedly entitled movements -  Boisterous Bourrée, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Saraband and Frolicsome Finale.

Formed in 1988, the Trondheim Soloists is one of the most exciting young ensembles performing on the international stage, with the average age of the musicians being under 30.  It has established itself as the most innovative chamber ensemble in Norway, collaborating with artists of the highest calibre across a broad range of genres.  The ensemble recently celebrated their 20th anniversary with concerts at a waterfall and on the top of a mountain! With the appointment of the cellist Øyvind Gimse as Artistic Director in 2002, the orchestra is now recognised as being at the forefront of defining artistic quality in Norway. The orchestra also has an enviable reputation for its recordings. The most recent disc, Divertimentimi, is the first music only Blu-ray disc and has received accolades across the whole recording industry.

“Hold on to your hats… Rarely has there been such drive to the ‘Boisterous Bourrée’ and ‘Frolicsome Finale’ of Britten’s Simple Symphony, yet there is no lack of emotion in the ‘Sentimental Saraband” BBC Music Magazine on the Trondheim Soloists –2009

Concert soloist, Tine Thing Helseth, aged 21, started to play trumpet at the age of 7 and is one of today’s most talked about international trumpet talents. In 2006 she took second prize at the Eurovision Young Musician Contest and the following year she released her debut album, receiving excellent reviews. In 2008 she was the first classical performer to be nominated and to win the Newcomer award at the Norwegian Grammy Awards. She recently opened the gala concert at the 2009 Nobel prize.

Tickets for this concert are priced from £9.50 - £27.50 (concessions available) and can  be purchased from the Box Office on 0113 224 3801 or online at www.leedsconcertseason.com.
