The All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon got off pretty lightly with the rain this year, so it was inevitable that events like the final day of the Garforth Arts Festival wouldn’t escape without a downpour. But, hey, we’re made of more sturdy stuff up north, so not even a spot of rain, nay torrential rain, could dampen our enthusiasm for what, over the last few years, has become something you just can’t leave out of your diary.

Kinch/Kill The Sun/Hurricane Sunday – The New Roscoe – June 9th 2008
It was with some degree of hesitation that I agreed to venture to The New Roscoe last Monday to see a ‘friend of a friends’ band called Kinch – I’d heard nothing but good about these lads but I’d also heard they played ‘great keyboard driven pop’, channelled the essence of ‘Ben Folds Five’ and had ‘an unusual funk/jazz sound …’ Funk/Jazz? They are due to play at some of the summer’s biggest festivals- including Glastonbury and V- and have just announced a winter tour of UK academies and arenas.

The Hifi never fails to impress me with the acts they book – in the past week alone we’ve seen an eclectic jumble of acts including the likes of Saul Williams, Vetiver and Bjork-in-waiting Lykke-Li – add to these The Felice Brothers and it’s fair to say the Hifi’s smug door policy is somewhat well placed. You could say it’s the thinking man’s Faversham.

Yeti, The Foxes, Pavilion, Rook & The Ravens – Wed 27th February 2008 @ The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Many moons have passed since the premature end to the Libertines. At that point Bass player (and the third part to their three part harmonies) John Hassall joined up with Yeti.
